The defendant confessed to 17 charges at Leicester Crown Court on Friday

An individual who laced sweets with tranquilliser and provided them to children at a summer camp in the area has admitted sexual offences against two boys aged nine and 10.

Jon Ruben was arrested after eight youngsters and an older person became sick at the facility in mid-summer.

The senior citizen, from Ruddington in Nottinghamshire, pleaded guilty to a series of 17 offences when he was present at the judicial center on recently.

However, he denied one particular crime he was charged with, which was against a nine-year-old boy.

The defendant was held in detention before a subsequent court date on 28 November.

'Candy game'

The prosecutor, presenting evidence, detailed Ruben's offending to the legal proceedings.

She stated his those affected were under-privileged children who were staying at a youth camp which he operated.

The defendant conducted a "treat game" with the children, Mrs Prior stated, in which he would access the boys' rooms when they were settling down and tell them to eat sweets "as quickly as they can".

She stated to the judge Ruben had played this game with the young males "repeatedly", and children had previously fallen ill the following morning.

She said Ruben had been successful in rationalizing this repeatedly as the minors being "overwrought by enjoyment", until his stepchild had worries in July 2025.

Mrs Prior KC added: "In the summer" his family member had worries about the situation, justifiably.

"They decided to examine in the individual's items."

The prosecutor explained objects including infant oil, Vaseline and injection devices were discovered, and his family member notified the police about his suspicions.

She explained the defendant proceeded to conduct the "candy game" with six boys that time - that Saturday - and they were all ill the subsequent day.

"Authorities" had not responded by that stage," she continued.

The regulatory agency, the Independent Office for Police Conduct, earlier informed that it was investigating the police response of the situation.

Mrs Prior explained the minors were having difficulty walking due to their condition, so the family member contacted the law enforcement again.

She explained the man then played the "candy game" in a room of five children.
