England and Welsh Placed Together for 2027 Rugby World Cup Down Under

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The pool stage draw was conducted by rugby icons such as two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

England and Wales find themselves placed in the same pool for the World Cup in 2027, setting up a highly-anticipated pool stage clash in the tournament Down Under. Completing the group in Group F by Tonga and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This draw echoes their infamous meeting in the pool stages of the 2015 World Cup, where a Welsh win at Twickenham contributed to the hosts' surprise group stage elimination.

Other Notable Pool Draws

Ireland and the Scots also share a group together, just as the situation from the France 2023 tournament. In that tournament, Ireland secured a 36-14 win, with their opponents failing to progress to the knockout stages.

Los Teros and Os Lobos, both impressed as underdogs in the last World Cup, round out that Pool D.

Notably, the victors of these two groups are kept apart from defending champions and world number one South Africa until the showpiece match, presuming the Springboks top their assigned pool.

Knockout Implications

If the groups play out in line with the current world rankings, other leading contenders like New Zealand and Les Bleus would remain separated from both England and Ireland until the final.

In that scenario, Argentina would be the other highly-seeded nation on that half of the knockout draw as those northern hemisphere teams.

Tournament Hosts Face Major Fixture

Hosts Australia find themselves together with their great rivals and three-time winners New Zealand in Pool A.

The Wallabies will kick off the World Cup in Perth on 1 October 2027 in a marquee fixture aimed at jump-start the competition.

In other groups, reigning champions South Africa have drawn the Azzurri, the Lelos and the Oaks. The French team are in a pool with Japan, future hosts the United States and Samoa.

Larger Tournament for 2027

Argentina will face the Flying Fijians, Spain and Canada as the tournament grows to 24 teams from the twenty who competed in 2023.

This edition will introduce a last-16 stage for the first time in Rugby World Cup existence.

While the victor of England and Wales's group may be kept apart from some of the game's biggest beasts initially, they will have to face the runner-up from Group B – most likely Italy – in the last 16.

A total of four of the remaining six pool winners will play a third-placed side from the initial group phase.
