Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

The English opening batter Crawley suggested he was not familiar with comments made by skipper Stokes regarding the dressing room not being "weak men".

The all-rounder made those words in several interviews in the wake of his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes against the Australians previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where England are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, the captain noted he had let his message to "circulate freely" within the squad.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

But, following the opener scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the press with a pinch of salt," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "fragile individuals" comment after England suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad afterwards took a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and third matches.

Before the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his players had held "honest" conversations and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the guidance from Stokes and coach McCullum had remained consistent with their prior three years in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do something special entering this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Series Victory

Crawley's dismissal on day four was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australia spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left England 207-6 chasing a daunting target of 435.

This means, the home team require just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an unassailable three-nil lead with three matches played.

A loss will extend England's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth straight away Ashes loss.

The current battle is set to be decided in only 11 days of cricket – after England fell the initial matches in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," said the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel at this point."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been tough. They're a very, very good team. It was always going to be hard touring here to face them. They were the front-runners coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

Although Crawley's innings in the third Test likely secures doubts about his short-term place in the England team, Ollie Pope appears under threat for his spot in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 in the team's second knock on day four, extending his poor record against Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

However, the opener said any notion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is noise from the outside. There's no discussion of that nature regarding Pope in the camp," he finished.
