Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a combined operation targeting an underground arms cache in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The site, pinpointed through surveillance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was located in mountains just to the north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a number of entry passages down to the facility... early reports indicate the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the attack on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - referred to as Daesh - enforced militant control over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action underscores our UK leadership, and determination to work closely with allied nations, to eliminate any revival of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the minister stated.

RAF aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State after its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to every member of British forces participating in this operation for their expertise and their bravery," he said. "Including them were thousands of UK service members on duty over the holidays. This mission, to remove terrorist threats who endanger our security, demonstrates how British military are prepared to act, throughout the year, protecting the UK within its borders and influential overseas."

In December, the American forces executed what it described as a "large-scale strike" targeting IS targets in Syria, following an assault resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations reports Islamic State still has roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Iraq and Syria.
