A minimum of thirteen people killed and ninety-eight injured in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the pace and execution of the country's flagship public works projects.

The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Train, a route constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate what caused this tragedy,” declared the national leader.

The official confirmed that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The official noted plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the former leader, whose time in office ended the prior year. This venture was intimately linked to his leadership's developmental agenda for the southern region.

Another massive rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The development of both railway systems was supervised by the armed forces, marking a dramatic expansion of its duties in public works. They were completed at an fast-tracked pace, beating predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had also sparked ongoing questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an previous collision this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-deadly derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a major opposition party called for an immediate halt in the development and management of all similar projects.

This halt was suggested while awaiting a comprehensive safety audit. The party declared that the situation "demands swift accountability."

In reply, the head of state maintained that the train had been running in complete compliance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and management of these national projects.
